In a genuinely socialist society, television would obviously have a different potential. But if you want to combat the social relations that exist today, you have to take into account the way it is organized at present.

Agreed. But after all even that organization has allowed the emergence of a run of working-class drama in television that already seems to me a significant achievement – the work of Garnett, Loach, some of the Wednesday Play productions or When the Boat Comes In. Whatever their limitations as a renewal of naturalism, these represent quite a substantial quantity of work. Whereas, while it seems to me perfectly possible for radicals to work in the unoccupied fringes of a culture, I do not think that on the whole the realist project is being much resumed there. What you see is a very effective use of certain theatrical modes for political satire or mobilization around specific issues, for new kinds of audience. Ironically, some of the people involved in this radical theatre are as hostile to the notion of realism as the avant-garde bourgeois theatre. Much of this movement is as distant, rightly or wrongly, from the project of resuming realist drama at a higher social stage, as really any other part of the theatre.
